WHY I PICKED THIS INDIVIDUAL
Richard Band is a well known music composer who has composed music for many, many films. He started composing music for the films his brother, Charles Band (Empire Pictures / Full Moon Features) before getting scoring assignments on more main stream projects and games. However, he maintained a career mostly working for lower budget and independent films, mostly within the horror and sci-fi genres. This is how he became synonymous with horror and sci-fi.
Richard Band was among many other composers who also dabbled in the horror and sci-fi genres. His music and others inspired my inspiration as an artist growing up. I would listen to their music while creating my own artwork as film music acted as an additional escape mechanism for my escapism. Now as an adult, I managed to land a Music Assistant role under Richard Band performing both administrative tasks as well as getting to compose additional music on his more recent scoring assignments.
That is why I chose him to be my first caricature. I dedicate this piece to him as a show of thanks and respect to him as both an artist and professional.
MY APPROACH TO CARICATURES
When I see people and describe them to others, I end up describing people as though they are a cartoon character. I never focus on a physical attribute in which to embellish, as most caricatures do. Rather, I try to focus on a prominent personality trait in which to embellish and then turn their outward appearance into how I perceive them.
With Richard Band, he is a bit of a gruff man, but beneath that harder, more serious exterior is a bunch of conniving mischief and dark humored individual. While he tells me he “doesn't watch horror movies”, he "only scores them", I see him as the Phantom from "Phantom Of The Opera" just without a disfigured face and mask. He lurks in the shadows, composing tons and tons of music, yet no one sees or hears from him personally but they know he exists.
The idea of him dressed up as a Spanish Inquisition era robe and hoodie while looking like death warmed over is a joke on how we creatives are eternally locked away in our studios, slowly withering away from malnutrition while trying to meet those deadlines.
ABOUT THE MEDIUM
I transitioned from traditionally made art (using pencil and paper) to digital tools such as a digital drawing tablet and Clip Studio Paint in combination with Photoshop. I still start with a pencil sketch based on photographic references. The pencil may be digital inside of a program designed for drawing, sketching, inking and painting, I still use it as though I had tangible art supplies in front of me.
