My interest in film music led to my attempts at creating music to movies. This is one of many early efforts by me to "score" or rather in this case "re-score" scenes to movies. I started with Halloween 4 and what was supposed to be just a few scenes turned into me rescoring pretty much the whole movie. I did not use the classic iconic Halloween Theme or any of the other musical ideas from the Halloween franchise. All were my own thematic material. There are still occasional performance mistakes heard and as with any of the recordings you will hear, these are "in the moment, stream of consciousness improvs" of musical ideas that were toyed with prior to hitting the record button.

Continuing with my attempts at creating music to movies, I chose to take on some more horror films, this time - The Fog (the original John Carpenter version). Although instead of doing the whole movie, I only did the finale scene starting with when the fog comes up and over the hillside and down to the light house. I did not use any of the existing music in the original film but I tried to emulate a similar feel. All the music were my own thematic material. There are still occasional performance mistakes heard and as with any of the recordings you will hear, these are "in the moment, stream of consciousness improvs" of musical ideas that were toyed with prior to hitting the record button.

The next movie I wanted to try to do some music to was Phantasm 2. Although instead of doing the whole movie, I did the long extended opening starting with the opening title card through the "recap" of the past and ending after the lead character is found at the cemetery digging up graves. This time I DID use the some of the original music in the film - Phantasm Theme - but only in small amounts near the beginning of the track and a little later. The rest of the music is my own thematic material. There are still occasional performance mistakes heard and as with any of the recordings you will hear, these are "in the moment, stream of consciousness improvs" of musical ideas that were toyed with prior to hitting the record button.

The next movie I wanted to try to do some music to was Halloween 5 as a way to expand upon the thematic ideas I came up with for my Halloween 4 re-score. By this point there is a noticeable difference in complexity musically and my discovering how to soften the string / choral instrument I was using to make it have more of a string sound and not be so harsh when I wanted to play ides with more intimate emotion. I explored using solo piano more here and used more of the piano / string combo with more aggression. I also started using more dissonance here to up the tension.

I did not use any of the classic iconic themes and instead used my own material, expanding upon it actually. Also, I chose to only score certain scenes instead of the whole movie. There are still occasional performance mistakes heard and as with any of the recordings you will hear, these are "in the moment, stream of consciousness improvs" of musical ideas that were toyed with prior to hitting the record button.

The next movie I wanted to try to do some music to was Pet Semetery. Although instead of doing the whole movie, as with some of my other efforts, I chose to only so a few pivotal scenes. This was a chance to do some more dramatic composing while still having a dark and horror edge to the ideas. This effort was also where my growth and transition into more complex ideas can be heard. None of the original musical ideas from the movie are used and again, I came up with my own. The next movie I wanted to try to do some music to was The Guardian - yes, that god awful William Feidkin movie). While hated by many, I found something special in it, namely that it had nearly no overt musical cues in it which made it ripe for me to tackle. Although instead of doing the whole movie, as with some of my other efforts, I chose to only so a few pivotal scenes. This was a chance to do longer cues and continue exploring a hybrid of drama and horror. None of the original musical ideas from the movie are used and again, I came up with my own. There are still occasional performance mistakes heard and as with any of the recordings you will hear, these are "in the moment, stream of consciousness improvs" of musical ideas that were toyed with prior to hitting the record button.

The next movie I wanted to try to do some music to was Single White Female. Although instead of doing the whole movie, as with some of my other efforts, I chose to only so a few pivotal scenes. This was a chance to do some more dramatic composing while still having a dark and horror edge to the ideas. Also, this was my full entry into doing tri-tone music and transparent writing. And sounding more like real-world horror music at the time. ThHis is one I want to come back to and use modern virtual instruments to re-record and expand upon.

None of the original musical ideas from the movie are used and again, I came up with my own. There are still occasional performance mistakes heard and as with any of the recordings you will hear, these are "in the moment, stream of consciousness improvs" of musical ideas that were toyed with prior to hitting the record button.

Note: This recording suffered major issues back in the day. The cassette tape used was in bad condition unbeknownst to me. It was recorded over something that was already on the tape and that content can be heard bleeding through (the consistent pulsing hum, the sporadic, yet muffled dialogue, and other weird artifacts).
